Post-fight Interview: Mykal Fox

Fox pitches shuts Bernardo out over weekend

Greg Leon: Congrats on your shutout victory over Eudy Bernando (25-5, 18 KOs). Can you give us some thoughts on your performance? Mykal Fox: "I think I did very well. I was trying to get the stoppage, but I did pitch the shutout. It was a ten round fight and I won them all. I was trying to get a stoppage, he had a lot of damage, he had a bloody and broken nose and swelling around his eye, but he was tough and surprised the ten rounds." Greg Leon: Did his durability surprise you at all? Mykal Fox: "Just a tad bit, because I had seen him get his lights put out against Mason Menard and Barrios, so I tried to put a little extra something on my punches to get him out of there, but yeah, his durability did surprise me. He started to get into a survival mode, so he became a bit harder to find down the stretch."

GL: Does that fact that you couldn't get the stoppage point towards the fact that styles make fights, or is it because you're not really a puncher?

MF: "It could be either one, but if I'm not that big a puncher then get somebody in the ring with me. These guys don't seem to be in a rush to fght me, so if I'm not a big puncher, that's just one less excuse they could use."

GL: Will there be another fight before the end of the year following these ten rounds?

MF: "I spoke to Marshall (Kauffman) and we were talking about a date in December. I'm not sure of the details at the moment, but I'd love to get back in the ring before the end of the year."

GL: How more regular fights will there be before you start to get really frustrated that none of the top guys are in a rush to dance with you?

MF: "It would tell me that I'm considered a threat and dangerous, which I would take as a compliment because I have an optimistic mind."

GL: It's funny how that second oppotunity came after the loss to Ergashev ain't it?

MF: (laughs) "Exactly."

GL: "Can you describe the fight for people who were unable to see it?

MF: "In the first round I came out on the jab. I wanted to establish that early. He was trying to jab back with me, but he had a lazy jab and I countered him all night and was able to land my lead hook with the left hand right behind it. I hurt him in the eighth and I was trying to get him out of there, but he withstood the barrage and was able to tie me up. He went into the survival mode after that. I kept landing shots when they were available, but we wound up going the distance."

GL: What do you feel like you need to improve on the most moving forward?

MF: "Keeping somebody on their back foot when I have them there. I know a lot of these guys have trouble fighting backwards. I know I can be a tremendous fighter coming forward, I'm already a great counter puncher, I'm just looking to improve being effective being on the front foot."

GL: Is it still easy to make 140?

MF: "It gets a little difficult sometimes because the body is still growing and I feel like I'm just starting to come into my man strength now."

GL: Closing thoughts.

MF: "I'm world ranked in 2019 and I"m looking to become a mainstay in boxing in 2020, so just stay tuned because we're ready."
