WBO orders Kovalev-Yarde

By Scott Shaffer

The WBO has ordered its light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (33-3-1) to make a  mandatory defense against Britain's Anthony Yarde. Kovalev (pictured) began his third reign as WBO champion when he defeated Eleider Alvarez in February, reversing a 2018 loss to Alvarez that ended his second reign. Yarde, considered one of the sport's top prospects, is 18-0 but really has not beaten any true contenders. The WBO gave the boxers' promotional teams thirty days to negotiate and reach an agreement, and if not, a purse bid will be scheduled. In case of a purse bid, the minimium bid will be $300,000, but the purses for this attractive fight are sure be in the millions.
