Erickson Lubin wants PBC to Hammer out Brian Carlos Castano fight

By G. Leon

Greg Leon: First of all congrats on your dominant stoppage victory over [former IBF junior welterweight champion] Ishe Smith. Can you give us some thoughts on your performance? Erickson Lubin: "I feel like it was a good performance. I did everything I wanted to do and everything I had to do to get him out of there. I was very happy with the performance and I'm looking to keep that up. Working with Kevin, we went hard in camp and I've been working with Kevin for almost a year and everything has been going straight since we've been together, it's all just been flowing."
GL: Could you have drawn that performance any better? Is that how you envisioned the fight going down?
EL: "Yeah, actually I seen it two ways. I thought Ishe might come in and be tough and durable, and able to withstand the punches I was throwing while being able to use some veteran moves and the other way I seen it is just how it went down. I got him out of there and I'm pleased with the performance, but I'm ready to keep it going. I'm looking to take over the division."
GL: What did you think about Erislandy Lara vs. Brian Castano fight [scored a draw]?
EL: "I was there and I really liked that fight."
GL: You called it a draw.
EL: "Yeah I did, I knew that Lara was going to fight smart and I didn't think either guy was going to separate hiself from the other. I thought Castano was going to be able to steal the fight, but Lara did enough to get the draw. It was a very good fight."
GL: Are Lara and Castano on a short list of opponents you'd like to fight?
EL "I definitely want to Castano the most. He's got a belt [WBA secondary title] and I'm ready for that fight to happen next. I don't know if he's going to be willing to fight me, but I definitely want to get in there with him."
GL: And how do you see that fight playing out?
EL: "Sh*t, Erickson Lubin with the W. I'm not predicting any knockouts or anything, but I feel that he's a fighter who fits my style."
GL: It would make for a good fight because he's very aggressive in there and he's not going to be hard to find.
EL: "He's short too, he's like 5'7", so I'm going to keep him at the end of all of my punches."
GL: Who do you like in the Tony Harrison vs. Jermell Charlo [WBC title] rematch?
EL: "That's a tough one. I don't know, I really don't know, I can't call it."
GL: Castano holds a secondary world title, would you consider yourself a world champion by beating him?
EL "Is it on paper that he's a champion."
GL: Yes a regular champion to the super champion Jarrett Hurd [who also holds the IBF title].
EL: "On paper it's a world championship though, right?"
GL: Yes.
EL: "So then I'd be a world champion and look to get the winner of Harrison and Charlo whoever that may be, Jarrett Hurd or any of the top guys in the division."
GL: Do you think Hurd will get past Julian Williams?
EL: "That's going to be a tough fight as well, I don't know we're going to have to wait and see."
GL: Even though you've been with Coach Kevin (Cunningham) for a while now, do you still feel you're just scratching the surface of what you're going to be in a year or two from now?
EL: "There's always room for improvements. Whoever I'm fighting we're going to have to come up with a game plan for that person. Kevin will come up with the master plan and it's my job to get in there and perform."
GL: Would Castano go the distance with you?
EL: "I don't know, but that doesn't matter because I'm going to be ready for twelve rounds, I'm going to be ready for fifteen rounds it doesn't matter. I'm a winner, I just want to win."
GL: When might your next fight take place?
EL: "It's definitely going to be in June. I spoke to the team after the Ishe fight and they said it's looking like June. If I get the Castano fight it might be later, so we've got see what they draw up."
GL: Closing thoughts for the fans.
EL: "I want to tell my fans to stay tuned, because it's going to be a big 2019. Follow me on Twitter @EricksonhammerL and on IG @EricksonHammer and I'll definitely be a world champion this year."
